On March 7, Messi was absent from Inter Miami’s 2-0 win over Cavalier FC in the CONCACAF Champions Cup. This was the second consecutive match in which the Argentine superstar did not play, although he had trained normally with the team before.
Speaking about Messi’s absence, coach Mascherano said: “Leo has no injury. Obviously, with the tight schedule, he felt tired and showed signs of being overloaded. Therefore, we decided not to let him play in Houston. We did not want to risk Messi having to miss a month of competition.”
Over the past 40 days, Messi has played a total of eight matches, including three in seven days from February 19 to 26. This busy schedule includes MLS matches, CONCACAF Champions Cup matches and pre-season friendlies in various countries.
Although Inter Miami won their last two games without Messi, fans are still looking forward to the return of the former Barca star. In 2025, Messi scored 4 goals and added 4 assists in all competitions.
“He is training well. He trained yesterday and today. We will see if he is in good health, but we have to consider what is best for the team,” added coach Mascherano.
Inter Miami next plays Charlotte FC in MLS on March 9, before traveling to Jamaica for the second leg of their CONCACAF Champions Cup round of 16 tie against Cavaliers. Around 35,000 fans are expected to attend to see Messi in action.
