The Fallout from Liverpool’s Clash with Chelsea: Inside the Heated Argument between Jordan Henderson and Alisson

Jordan Henderson and Alisson clash during Liverpool’s trip to Chelsea as the Reds captain berates the goalkeeper for failing to communicate properly

Jordan Henderson and Alisson were involved in a furious argument during Liverpool’s 0-0 draw with Chelsea.

Liverpool rode their luck at times as they made away from west London with a point having been under sustained Chelsea pressure for much of the evening, with the hosts missing a gluttony of presentable opportunities.

Having made six changes to his starting XI, Jurgen Klopp might have been expecting a bigger and better reaction from his players to Saturday’s defeat at the Etihad Stadium than the one he received.

Chelsea, pressing for an opener, almost found one after a bit of miscommunication between Alisson and Fabinho almost allowed them in.

Not one to shy away from berating his team-mates, captain Henderson then weighed in to offer his two cents in the direction of the goalkeeper.

Alisson took issue with his captain and fired back as they engaged in an argument in the box
The two appeared furious with each other as the game got back underway and they claimed a point

Alisson, who Klopp has been on the record this season as admitting he has been their player of the season so far, appeared to take issue with his captain’s words and fired back.

The two then squared up inside the Liverpool box before Joel Matip intervened and the goal-kick was taken.

Stuart Pearce, working for TalkSport, said the incident ‘stemmed’ from Saturday, with Liverpool players showing frustration at their current plight.

Another such incident, also involving Henderson, occurred in the first half when the former Sunderland midfielder screamed at Matip for not passing him the ball quickly enough when he had got himself into a good position in the right outside channel.

Matip appeared more placable than the Brazilian, however.

‘It stems from Saturday, you can see the frustration there and on this occasion you’re looking at such a poor miss [from Felix],’ he said.

Liverpool, who are visited by league leaders Arsenal on Sunday, have experienced a difficult season, with the squad having been unable to get anywhere near the same level of performance that they had come to be known for.

It has been a campaign beset by inconsistency, injury and issues related to uncertainty within the squad.

Jurgen Klopp appeared apathetic after the game - claiming he was 'not interested' in the top four conversation

Klopp, usually upbeat and a motivator of players, appeared downcast after the Chelsea draw, claiming he was ‘not interested’ in the top four conversation.

‘I don’t know if there’s any chance of the top four. For that to happen we must win pretty much all our games and other teams above us must lose a lot,’ he said.

‘It’s not in our hands but it’s not important. At the moment I don’t even know where we are and I’m not interested.

‘We have another ten games and the next one is Arsenal. If we are difficult to beat against them we can win this game. If not, Arsenal will just roll over us.

‘Today’s match was not the most spectacular and no-one is going to be writing a book about it. But it’s a little step in the right direction.’
