Rafael Nadal could look for work in another sport after retiring from professional tennis.
Less than two days away from retiring from professional tennis, Rafael Nadal has already been tipped as a candidate to take on a new role in another sport.
The 22-time Grand Slam champion officially ended his illustrious career when Spain crashed out of the Davis Cup on Tuesday.
Nadal’s uncle and former coach, Toni, has already looked to the future and believes his nephew will accept a job at Real Madrid.
Nadal retired when Spain lost their quarter-final tie to the Netherlands. The 38-year-old suffered a defeat in his last match when Botic van de Zandschulp beat him in straight sets in his opening singles match.
Carlos Alcaraz kept Spain in the match and won his own match, but the Dutch team won the decisive doubles encounter, forcing Nadal to retire shortly after the clock struck midnight.
Although the former world number one gave plenty of notice of the end of his career, announcing his retirement from the Davis Cup in early October, he has remained tight-lipped about his plans for after playing.
Although it’s something he’s rarely addressed, Nadal has long been mentioned as the next president of his beloved football team, Real Madrid FC. And his uncle Toni added fuel to the fire after his retirement by admitting that a position at the club would be perfect.
“I imagine that if he is offered the position of director of Madrid, he would be delighted,” the Majorcan tennis coach told El Larguero.
However, he made an important distinction about his nephew’s potential role. Toni continued: “I didn’t say president. I think it’s because he’s a big Real Madrid fan.
“I have experienced it with him in New York and Australia, in very important tournaments, getting up and making us get up in the middle of the night to go watch the Madrid match.”
Although Nadal’s uncle imagines him taking a position at Real Madrid, it is mere speculation.
“He really likes sport, especially football, so I think of course he would like to be involved, but I don’t know. I speak without any knowledge other than my intuition,” he added.
But there is one thing that Toni is sure his nephew will do when he retires. “Now he will be calm for a while and then he will get involved with sport, I understand with complete certainty that, in one way or another, he will get more involved with his academies, he will get more involved with the Manacor academy, because he did it for a reason, it is his passion,” he said.
