41-year-old women’s tennis legend Serena Williams was in attendance at the 2023 Miami Grand Prix. While Williams had a great time at the Formula One event, as did every other high-profile name that attended the event, there was one incident that would have left a bitter taste in her mouth. It involved iconic British Formula One commentator Martin Brundle.
This was the second time that Serena Williams and Martin Brundle were involved in an awkward incident. The last time something similar happened was in 2021 at Austin. Following the incident, the relationship between the two appeared to have soured.
What went wrong between Serena Williams and Martin Brundle in Miami? Martin Brundle is one of the most iconic names in Formula One commentary. However, at the 2023 Miami Grand Prix, he did two things that have put him under the spotlight for all the wrong reasons. For starters, Brundle had the chance to interact with Serena Williams. However, instead of engaging Williams, he ignored her and walked away.
In an interview with Sky Sports, Brundle revealed his reason for ignoring Williams. Apparently, Bundle “can’t stand the rejection”. This was an obvious reference to the interaction between the pair back in 2021.
Brundle was also told to steer clear of actor Tom Cruise when he went on his ritualistic grid walk ahead of the race. In his interview, the commentator aimed a sarcastic dig at the likes of Cruise and Williams. “They all think they are famous. Some of them very much are.”

On his first attempt at getting something out of Williams, he failed to draw the tennis legend’s attention. He didn’t fare much better on his second attempt either, as Williams’ entourage brutally turned him away. Following his failure at grabbing Williams’ attention, Brundle joked, “It’s a double fault, it’s a double fault.”
