Japan’s Chocolate Grape: Exploring Cocoa’s Essence Among the Vines

Recently, on TikTok recently appeared a clip that made people talk about a “2 in 1” fruit. Specifically, when dangling from the tree, it looks like a mango with purple skin. When the knife was cut, netizens were “severely shocked” because the inside was like the intestines of… a banana.

And even more surprising, when cut into pieces, there were a lot of black seeds.

Under the comment section, 90% of Vietnamese TikTok users do not know what this is. Some people even think that the video owner used some trick to catch the view, but there is no such thing in the world? Some others expressed the view that this is an abuse of photoshop during the holidays to attract the attention of the video owner.

However, there are still people who have tried to confirm that this is Akebi purple grape – a common fruit in the land of the rising sun in Japan. The place is considered the “paradise” of the fussy, fastidious and strict types.

Akebi is also known as Japanese chocolate grape. This fruit looks like purple mango or light purple sweet potato. The inner part is milky white and contains many black seeds like passion fruit. This exotic fruit can only be grown in Hokkaido – the coldest place in Japan.

Like Vietnam’s pinned guava toad, Akebi fruit is considered a favorite snack of many Japanese children. Although it is a hybrid of mango, banana and passion fruit, its taste has nothing to do with it, on the contrary, it has a sweet taste with a bit of bitterness. Truly the miracle of mother nature.

For a long time, the Japanese have known to take advantage of Akebi pods to make many delicious dishes such as mixing salad, baking, rolling fried dough, stuffed with braised meat, salted melon, and the intestines can be used to make jam. Meanwhile, the seeds are also extracted into essential oils and the leaves of the Akebi tree are used to make a very delicious tea.

Going to Vietnam, this fruit is “expensive to cut into pieces” because it is rare and difficult to find. Photo: Tiengnhat24h

This plant can be used from leaves, bark, intestines, seeds… to make foods and drinks

It is known that when coming to Vietnam, this strange fruit is not cheap at all. Because it’s both rare and hard to find, plus the cost of shipping things, its average selling price always fluctuates at 10-12 USD / fruit. Anyone who is curious can buy it and eat it.
