“Couldn’t Be Both”: Serena Williams Challenges Stereotypes by Infusing High Fashion into Tennis

Former WTA star Serena Williams has cemented her status as a true legend, excelling both in tennis and business. Two years after her retirement, Williams continues to thrive with her beauty brand, WYN Beauty. At a recent event, the Olympic gold-medalist delved deeper into her fights to challenge stereotypes and prove how one can be both beautiful and indomitable in their pursuits.

Williams was a world-class athlete and one of the best-dressed players on the court. After her retirement in 2022, she invested all her time in her makeup brand, WYN Beauty. Not only did she make this brand popular in the United States but also received applause for its under $30 items. Recently, the legend attended a Vogue event in Miami and oozed great confidence in a bright red shirt dress and her signature blonde curls. Williams showcased her fashion sense while explaining how being fashionable and a talented athlete at her time were considered two opposite factors.

“When I was playing, you could be either strong or beautiful; you couldn’t be both, I wanted to kind of push that away and say no, you can be strong, and beautiful, and powerful, and amazing, and so that was how Wyn Beauty was born,” she said while detailing her preparations before attending the Miami event. Williams has a whopping 17m followers on IG with whom she shares her entrepreneurial success, motherhood journey, and her feelings. She shared this clip on her IG platform receiving huge love from her followers. And why wouldn’t she?

Williams broke the narrative with her interesting on-court hairstyles. Not to forget her iconic French Open moment in 2018 when she stole all the spotlight by wearing a catsuit just months after giving birth to Olympia. During the launch of her brand WYN Beauty, she expressed how looking good on the court was equally important for her alongside her performance. “I’m so excited to introduce Wyn Beauty to the world. To me, beauty has always been about self-expression and stepping into the best version of myself. Throughout my career, I was always searching for makeup that looked good after hours on the court, mixing products myself and creating my own formulas while traveling the world,” said Williams. Her words echoed how desperately she wanted to break the conventional stereotype and show female athletes that they can look good too while playing.

Serena Williams has also been applauded by many social media influencers and people who found her a trailblazer in their journey in terms of fashion and success. They highlight how this WTA legend influenced the scene to break its mono-centric outlook.

People believe Williams’ influence has “certainly been a massive assist” in fashion and sportswear

In an interview with Forbes in 2022, a social media influencer, Champagne Rose who worked with renowned brands like Balmain, Chanel, and Dior said, “It’s clear she’s been a trailblazer for all of us. Inclusivity and equality are extremely important and it’s something I’ve supported for many years. If you look back at the fashion industry it’s been very mono-centric and has not done a good job of expanding the scope of its value, and even worse not attributing it to the cultures where those elements have originated from. Serena’s influence has certainly been a massive assist not just in sportswear but fashion overall,” she said.

Rose further added, “Serena has managed to not only be a beacon and role model but simultaneously has provided opportunities using her influence. We each have a responsibility to do that and it’s great to see her making such amazing waves in the industry.”

Serena Williams is truly an icon who not only surprised the world with her talent but used her influence to uplift the underprivileged. Today when she confidently talks as an entrepreneur, she highlights the ways women can be empowered and how it takes just true intentions to do that.
