Lionel Messi and the Inter Miami stars have repeatedly challenged president David Beckham to put on his boots and play football with them.
Despite being 37 years old and entering the final stages of his career, Messi has maintained his peak form for Inter Miami. The Argentine superstar has reunited with Luis Suarez, Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets, turning Inter Miami – currently ranked 3rd in MLS – into “MLS version of Barcelona”.
But apart from playing professionally, the quartet also has another hobby: dragging David Beckham to football matches.
In an interview with Men’s Health, Beckham revealed:
“They always urge me. Leo [Messi], Luis [Suarez], Jordi [Alba], Sergio [Busquets]… always tell me: ‘Come on, go on the pitch!'”
However, Beckham did not clarify whether he would actually accept the challenge of competing with these legends, as he realized his own limits.
At 49, Beckham has been retired for more than a decade. He admits that his physical condition is not the same after a traumatic experience filming an advertisement for Predator – Adidas’s shoe line.
“I was taking free kicks, making long passes. I was so excited that I did a bit too much. In the past, I rarely warmed up or stretched before shooting the ball.”
“I hit the eighth shot and felt a strain in my thigh. The cameraman asked me if I could do a few more shots, and I said, “No, that’s probably enough!””
Becks won 6 Premier League titles, 1 Champions League and 2 FA Cups in a glorious career under Sir Alex Ferguson. He officially retired in 2013 after a short time playing for PSG.
Although he did not give a definite answer, it seems that the Man Utd legend understands that time waits for no one. However, who knows, maybe one day, fans will see President David Beckham suddenly put on his boots to ‘fight’ with Messi?
